“Gliding o’er all, through all,
Through Nature, Time, and Space,
As a ship on the waters advancing,
The voyage of the soul—not life alone,
Death, many deaths I’ll sing.”

The Skyler White Effect
The cognitive dissonance that happens when a female character is presented by the narrative as absolutely correct in their judgment of a male character, and yet the viewers assume she’s the bitch.Skyler quickly became one of my favourite characters in Breaking Bad. And I do find that a lot of men watching this show, including my boyfriend (he got told off) think that Skyler is “over reacting” when it comes to Walt’s behaviour. Personally I think this paragraph summed up my thoughts perfectly.
I think Skyler sees Walt as we’re meant to see him: a self-deluding, pathetic man, but a dangerous one. She punctures the fantasy that there’s anything admirable left about Walter White, that we should still root for the man who fought back against illness and emasculation with a pork pie hat and chemistry.
That’s how I’ve increasingly come to see him throughout the series. I loved and admired Walt in the beginning. He only reacted with violence to those who some may consider deserved it, or were threatening him or his family. I can’t say I wouldn’t react the same in similar circumstance, had I the knowledge of chemistry. He’s forgotten why he started, which was to provide for his family. I’ve stopped admiring him and started hating him for his abusive and manipulative behaviour.
But he is a great character, the kind that allows a story like Skyler’s to be told. I just wish more people realise what a fantastic, strong, multifaceted female character she is. And SNARK GOALS forever.
Edit: One thing I can criticize about this show though, there is a serious lack of PoC representation. Which is super disappointing, in what has to be my favourite show of EVER.
Reblogging this because its interesting how many of my male friends absolutely hate Skyler, its always me pointing out that even though she may not be very interesting to watch (for me personally - until maybe her freak out this season anyway) she is a damn fucking noble person compared to Walt! She’s sympathetic to me, a good moral anchor for their family especially for someone who is walking the line between the law/hank/dea’s righteous standpoint and all the darker aspects of the show that shes aware of, including her own money laundering for ted and walt.
Skylar White is a Goddess.
